Saddle Hunting Set Up

The first step in saddle hunting is selecting the tree you want to hunt from. With a saddle, this process is relatively straightforward, as almost any tree capable of safely supporting your weight will work. Unlike traditional tree stands, saddles are much more forgiving of trees that lean or have irregular shapes.

Once you’ve chosen your tree, the next step is climbing. There are numerous climbing methods available, and the growing popularity of mobile saddle hunting has led to a wider range of options. Whichever climbing system you choose, aim to reach a height of about 17 feet or more, though your exact position can vary based on your comfort, available cover, and shooting angles.

While setting up, consider the direction you expect the game to approach from. Remember, in a saddle, you’ll be facing the tree trunk. I prefer to position myself so that the trunk acts as a natural barrier between me and the approaching deer. Ideally, I aim for the deer to pass by my tree on the left side, as this provides a strong-side shot—particularly important for right-handed shooters. This setup maximizes your shooting opportunities and ensures a more effective hunt.
